Light the Night AVL began in 2024, when artist Liberty Hanson Wild, who lives just above the River Arts District, felt called to create something that could lift spirits after Hurricane Helene. Witnessing the devastation in RAD — a place so many artists depend on for their livelihoods and sense of belonging — she wanted to use creativity to bring light, hope, and connection to the community.

What started as a heartfelt idea quickly grew into something much bigger: on the Winter Solstice, hundreds of people gathered with handmade lanterns, filling the River Arts District with warmth, creativity, and joy. The first Light the Night was a moving reflection of what makes Asheville so special — its resilience, imagination, and strong community spirit.

This year, we are excited to see the event continue to grow organically, shaped by the ideas and creativity of people across Asheville. The River Arts District Artists, businesses, and neighbors are all bringing their energy to the walk, making it a true reflection of the city’s culture and heart.

Light the Night is, at its heart, a celebration of hope, community, creativity, and the bond with nature that defines Asheville — all carried into the longest night of the year.
